yowzah!!

ok, i feel like i just came out of a documentary cave & realized there was a whole world out there. here are some things im excited about now that the Fest is over:
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade. they claim it's a family show, but it's only for boobs-& -performance-art-friendly families. like ours.
the Cyclone coaster is extremely fast & dangerous. nothing says Coney Island like carnies smoking on the platform & barking at you to "GET ON! Move IT!" & then they 'hold' your camera for you while you are worrying that a) your boobs are going to come flying out of your dress atop that first hill and b) [says ct] youre going to careen either into the projects or the ocean. did i mention this 80 y/o wooden coaster is still run by levers hand-cranked by that same carnie that's 'holding' you camera. ride it while you still can.
the Wonder Wheel is also reccomended, especially in a thunder storm, as Maya, Dave, Amy & I learned last year. Mermaid Queen pic by Dave Smooth. I'll let him post the rest of the gems here or on his exceptional photo blog.

Thunders storms are one of my fav parts of summer, and there's one about on now. hopefully the sky will finally pour the rain it's been threatening for the last few days & cool us off. its one of the better things going on the east coast (sorry seattle.)

new Bjork album Volta - i've heard it a little and am anxious to buy it, thou im not sure i'll spring for the Dolby Surround delux version. i do hope i can spring for the tour.

summer = doing nothing. i hope.
summer = random trips to random places. look out Atlantic City. gambling punks looking for a spectacle are coming to your shore.

oh and in hot literature news, JT Leroy is fake. ok that that's hot or news is questionable, but what is news is that Laura Albert, who concocted the whole story/character & essentially used JT as an elaborate pseudonym has been charged with fraud and fined, seemingly because a movie contract was signed with the pseudonym and there was money involved. Now, im no legal expert, but would anyone charge any of the other famous pseudonym-users with fraud (movies have been made in their names)? is this an issue of hurt feelings? or was she truly misrepresenting herself to gain the attention of the world that, in a quest for some kind of authenticity in their fiction, otherwise disregarded her writing?

a film about boobs and ninjas

Yesterday was not a good day, I needed the kind of help that only a summer movie can give. The plan was a mild beer buzz with fantastic four: the rise of the silver surfer, but I took a last minute zig to D.O.A.-dead or alive- the film version of the video game. I was so happy. Though there are many characters in this game (and film) the director lets you know right of the bat, with intros, that we only be following the story of the three hottest girls. And while I knew that any movie the is commercially viable will be PG 13, I must assure that 10 years of xena and the industry standard of pushing the envelope coupled with computer generated bras and things of the like make for plenty of side boob (thanks peter griffin) action and panty shots, some of which solicited out loud laughs from the audience.

The plot is simple the worlds bad asses meet to compete in a martial arts tournament with a $10,000 prize. After the opening montage we get a scene where everyone jumps out of a plane and climbs up a 10 story Buddha to look over a CG city. Then there is a montage of medical exams (in undies) followed by a montage of a bunch of fights, most of the characters featured will not appear again (even if they won their fights). The fights are perfect, they have no speech, no back story, last about 1 min tops, are super kung fu bassery (sometimes in wet t- shirts) and awesome sound effects. The foley artists that would normally hit steaks or break ears of corn chose instead to make the sounds guns being cocked and fired upon a punch being thrown. Ca-chick, boom.

After that there are a couple of flashbacks followed by approximately 10 scenes all of which fall into the following categories: 1. computer programmer with glasses macks on hot girl. 2. Sexual innuendos between 2 women. 3. Evil genius hints at a master plan. After enough booo-ring of that, almost 20 min worth, we get to the improtu bikini volleyball game. There were also bikini clad score keepers. And don’t ask, you know it was in slow-motion, slow motion montage.

Then the stupid plot came back and I was bummed. It turned out the bad guy was stealing everybody’s moves and downloading them into his brain with super special sunglasses. He becomes the best fighter with feathered hair ever, until his glasses get knocked off, he gets paralyzed by ninja acupuncture and then the island blows up.

Look, the movie is poo, poo on a stick, a poo stick getting waived about in a computer generated wire fighting universe. I script was no unlike a poorly translated incredible hulk Chinese bootleg. What you need to know is summed up by the New York Times reviewer: ”The prime contestants are a ninja princess (Devon Aoki), a pro wrestler (Jaime Pressly) and an assassin-thief (Holly Valance), who all possess a similar martial artistry and allergy to clothing” - JEANNETTE CATSOULIS. And it is an ideal forgot your troubles check your brain at the door movie if you like girls, otherwise rent white squall.

More Derby Goodness

The Today Show will be filming, and there's something about cake as well.....

Also, this is the same match-up from the action-packed championship bout from the premiere (last years) season. I'm hoping it's possible to cram both roller derby and closing night at the infamous SILVERDOCS on this monumental Sunday, but w. it Fathers Day and all, we'll see which activity reigns supreme.

Look I don’t want everybody to think I’m a one trick pony. I blog about bikes and beer. In the tradition of the worlds most popular drink being for everybody, here is Kodomo no nomimono: Japanese beer for children. Unfortunately, much like the beer for dogs that blogged of before, there is no booze in this beer. But unlike the dog beer, which is marketed to dog owners, this beer is marketed towards children, children who will be happier, cooler and pull chicks better if they drink this beer. Cheers.

if you know me you know that tost is hiring, and nothing makes you meet more people than putting a help wanted sign in a bar window. the most recent and depressing applicant is stefan baile. he is no more qualified than any number of people that swing by for the job, his exp includes farm hand, granite polisher and store clerk, he is almost exactly my age. he was also a decent first baseman for the boston red sox for four years. everyone wants to be a bartender.

seattle, buy 100 of these now

in my world of living in a studio apartment with 6 bikes, this is the best thing i ever saw. all the info is at biketree.com but gist is such, it stores bikes outside not in studio apartments, locks them, loads the bike for you, is solar powered and is from the future. as a people, we deserve a lot of the cool sci-fi stuff from the future now, and this plexi-glass fugly thing is a great start for me.

Mayor's Nightlife Proposal
SeattleNMA briefed the City Council’s Economic Development and Neighborhoods Committee last Thursday on our position regarding the Mayor’s proposal and provided alternative approaches to deal with public safety, noise and litter issues. Our message is the city should do a better job of enforcing existing laws, and provide additional police officers in the entertainment districts on weekend nights. Our full presentation can be viewed here at http://seattlenma.org/downloads/SNMA_powerpoint.

The non dogma version is this: basically this proposal is a ludicrous attempt to appease the only set of home voters who vote (homeowners) and will pass because my people don’t. Step it up my people, if this passes (and some version will because nobody on the council will ever get another vote from a homeowner if it doesn’t) you will end up with bars that can be closed by the city council for littering, the city council can veto the promotion of hip hop shows (specifically), requires bartenders and owners to do the job of police, and doesn’t increase funding for anything involving liquor control or law enforcement. The SPD and the liquor control board are against this because it adds more laws to their job they already publicly say they can’t enforce. And while it hurts existing business in more ways than I can list, it does nothing to prevent (zoning restrictions) new bars and restaurants opening where ever they damn well please. They Mayor is doing a big dance and waving his hands to try to show you that he is working, whereas in reality, he is a big fat tool.

Expoli-tastic! (not tarantino)

I'm watching too many documentaries in my real life, so in an alternate universe, i went to see GRINDHOUSE (& then i dreamt about car chases for two days). here's my review. get ready.

step one, bored saturday night.
step 2. nutella crepes.
step 3. copious, um, beers.

step4: sneak in the theater, hold the door!
step5: endless ads.
step6: endless trailers. appealing: HOT FUZZ (from SHAUN OF THE DEAD guys, about cops.). also LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD. yes! I was just thinking American needed another DIE HARD! (see #3)
horrible: John Cusack is grieving his dead daughter (too old to lust after unattainable women) and a ghost hunter. Sam Jackson is a saucy hotel manager with a 1970s haircut begging him not to stay in the the. most. haunted. room. ever. Dunh-DUNH! it'd be better in Japanese....
alert to Cuasck - 20-something girls will stop loving you all together if you don't stop making crap movies. you've got once more chance.

Step 7: MORE TRAILERS! only this time it looks like faux effed up film, dust, scratches and all. suddenly i am no longer in the georgetown lowes, but the Willow Lawn Mall theater, circa 1973. the floor is SO sticky. Action fans are all around me. MACHETE! - someone fucked the wrong mexican. i hear Rodriguez's making it a feature - i don't know whether i'm excited or horrified.

Step 8: oh. damn. Rose McGowan wearing gold tube-bead hip fringe, somehow not unlike Wonder Woman, is go-go dancing in front of me. she is hot and her makeup is on fire! can i do my eyes like that? why is she so foxy?
Then, PLANET TERROR has the grossest zombies i've ever seen. they are bubbling! they are still alive & turning into zombies! damn government & their radioactive war experiments gone horribly awry! Freddy Rodriguez does his best impression of Twin Peak's James, McGowan's Cherry Darling is a feminist analysis for another day, & naughty-nurse Marley Shelton is a dead ringer for this chick >

step 9: more trailers! including Nick Cage as a chinese stereotype - Fu Manchu! best role to date. good work sir.

10: tarantino has a film in this duo, but you probably could leave before it comes on & save yourself an hour. we, sadly, didn't take this advice and watched the full hour of DEATH PROOF. it dwindles almost into nothingness, clear that Tarantino has no idea what women actually talk about, or, more precisely, how they talk. the film's only credit is the indestructable Zoe Bell who stars riding on the hood of a speeding white muscle car. essentially, this movie is one long conversation leading into an excuse to do this stunt - The Ship's Mast. don't waste your time seeing the movie, she rides on the hood of the car. don't try this stunt. apparently, if you do, a crazed stunt man will chase you off the road, and then you have to beat him to death. tarantino says this is a 'women's revenge film' but, as far as brutal revenge goes, i've seen better.
Speaking of doing better - fan girls sitting with tarantino in death proof - you, too can do better. DTMFA.

So yea. Lucky for you, i hear that Weinstein Company, after a dismal opening weekend for GRINDHOUSE, is going to snip the boys in half, and hopefully tarantino's half will whither and die and stop trying to harsh rodriguez's buzz.

ROLLER DERBY ACTION!

I look 47 but I'm 24

Will Tom Waits ever tour again? I mean, seriously. It seems to be something I have to do before I die. before HE dies. i'm listening to 'You Can Never Hold Back Spring' from his new "Brawlers Bawlers and Bastards" and I love his ancient salty whisky voice. I used to love-LOVE him, then I kind of fell away, then, thanx to OYK, i'm hot for him again. He's the king of the circus and the master of the drunk piano. There are few people I'd do this for, but i would fly to whatever US city he performs in, and i would program a bad film about him at my festival just to get him here. I was hoping that being BFF with Jarmusch would help, but i've never even seen that guy again, so i don't know what to do. Also, wikipedia just told me he has 3 kids.

the way wars should be

finally, something that incorporates my love of firearms, desire to waste food and my 12 year old boy heart. run, don't walk to the store. in the light seattle rain, the insult would thusly be added to the injury of being shot with a marshmallow. just don't shoot vegans and jews, that's inappropriate, unless they have a tofu and/or kugel sling, then its on!

Seriously big shout out to Dan Deacon of B'more, MD and Valient Thorr for ROCKIN MY FUCKIN EVENING last night.

It's hard to explain the best parts of their shows, but Dan's involved audience members in animal costumes, a green strobe skull, and a story about eating his friends skin and getting horny (but not hard).

JohnnyB attests that the head banging quotient was fullfilled at Valient Thorr as he barely managed to "avoid spinal compression".

Wish you were here.

Why am I not on a panel?

Right now I'm in a songwriter session with Donovan:

He was 18, just arrived in London, 1964-ish, had absorbed Woody Guthie, Pete Seeger. One late morning and all his friends were horizontal and he wrote his song Colors, which he's singing now.

He's joined by Johnny Bush, who wrote Whiskey River, made famous by Willie Nelson which he's singing now. Apparently Willie's recorded it 27 times, and Johnny's giving us a new verse today:

"Willie please don't stop singing Whiskey River,
its the only thing keeping me alive.
Willie please don't stop singing Whiskey River,
I need those checks I get from BMI."

But someone really needs to find a new sound person, I've never heard such expensive guitars sound so bad.

and Peter Holsapple, who's now singing Child In You,

"Go run and play with yourself if no one else will..."

It's Raining in Austin

I'm at SXSW, maybe I'll get around to posting a few times while I'm here.

I got in town yesterday and the music part of the conference starts today, so I haven't heard any bands yet.

Last night Jason took me to a film distributor's happy hour, B-side - met some interesting folks and they pitched to me about using their DVDs as premiums in fundraising campaigns. Gave me a copy of a DOC, Before the Music Dies.

My partner in musical crime, JohnnyB, gets in this afternoon.

My interests for the evening include:

6:30 Keynote speaker: Pete Townsend
8 Charlie Louvin
9:30 Pistol Love Family Band
10 Cara Luft
11 The Wrights
1 Les Savy Fav

But who knows if I'll stick to that? Especially when the drinking begins...

Wish you were here,
Jen

p.s. Jason has 3 cats!

goodbye to a lifelong friend

I've been drag ass imploding lungs sick all week and the final pain in the ass of getting drugs is over. The trials were thus: 1. live. 2. pass the guilt trip given to me by my dr's secretary: "you haven't been in since 2005," she guilted "to which i thought, pretty good hunh?" show me any man under 30 who has been to the dr as much as me and is under 30, i've been like 4 times in 7 years, can anyman beat that? (thankyou ladies for getting an annual exam, further proving it is harder to be a girl/woman.) 3. The my pharmacy didn't fill the prescription for 3 days because i didn't have insurance and they assumed that i wouldn't want it filled without a prescription. that is to say, he'll likely have to go to the hospital first. 4. and 5. cfc's in asthma drugs have been banned making them less effective, more expensive but not bad for the environment. i could kick al gore in the balls right now. good idea with a shitty follow through and it makes me want to vote for earth destroying republicans but then i could never afford drugs.
in case you were wondering where i'd be friday night. happy birthday to me.

art + bank robbers

Can you believe it's March?! Spring is coming!

There are lots of things i keep thinking about posting to the B-G. mostly, have you noticed that a pair of teen girls in GA have beat us to the punch of stylish bank-robbing? Will their huge sunglasses protect them? (i kind of hope so, but probably some other Mean Girl will rat them out) Are they robbing to support a fashion habit? To pay for college? Or because one is preggers like in SUGAR & SPICE? (no one can talk about this without mentioning the cheerleader bank heist film)

in DC, surprisingly, there's a lot of art happening this weekend.
Friday 3/2: The Hirschhorn's AfterHours party with DJ Ian Svenonius (formerly of The Make-Up) also features a giant light-brite we can play with. A kick-off for their new show of light-based works. $10 for all the DC glitterarty you can handle.

Saturday 3/3 Hemphill's new show opens - "Tug of War" - featuring 'pop surrealism.' looks like some interesting stuff in the show with works by toymaker stars Gary Baseman + Tim Biskup, among others. i feel like I've seen a lot of these works in Juxtapose, and depending on the prices, could be a great example of Jed Perl's bitchy & insightful New Republic article on if the art world has lost it's mind. Has it? Have I because I want to buy this? Does it matter? Do i care? Am I, a mid-20s, single, middle class, educated, office worker part of some bourgeois because I desire art?

Sunday (SUNDAY SUNDAY!!) of course is hot roller derby action in Baltimore with a guitar hero and best metal outfit contest. see previous for the details. I'll be there with big tits & bigger hair in an A-shirt. what could be more metal than that?

USA a OK

The question about the us citizenship test has been bouncing around with some of my friends. Lisa said that she thought that most adults couldn't pass it. But after taking it, I'd hazard a guess around 30 %not passing and 50% being em-bare-assed about not knowing stuff, while the other 20% of us Virginians, Bostonians and die-hard political junkies know it all. The test is an interview, see if you can read it to someone or have someone read it to you. Its what I'll be doing tonight. Here is a sample test with a couple of interesting articles.

A bar secret:

One of the ways you make money at a bar is exclusivity deals. For example, in my tiny crummy bar this week camel has given $3500 plus a 20% rebate on wholesale cigs and a mess o' free stuff. Redbull wrote a check for 4k and said "eh, buy chairs." It funny because bar owners get so greedy about the kickbacks (legal and illegal) that the come to rely on them. An un-named bar in the neighborhood recently ditched Budweiser for failure to cut them their 10k (illegal) annual check. As I blog of my deals, know that they are legal, but elsewhere, not so much.

Support DC's all-ages policy!

On Kojo Nnamdi's show RIGHT NOW.

"For decades, dance clubs have been incubators for Washington D.C.'s thriving musical cultures, from Go-Go to Punk to Hip-Hop. But after a local teen was tragically murdered at a local club, D.C. leaders are considering legislation to curb teen access to venues that serve alcohol. We look at the recent controversy over "all-ages" clubs from a cultural perspective.

Guests

Kevin "Kato" Hammond, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Take Me Out to the Go-Go Magazine; Member, the Go-Go Coalition

Mark Andersen, Co-founder, Positive Force D.C.; Co-author "Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk in the Nation's Capitol" (Akashic); and Director, We Are Family Group

DJ Eurock, Hip-Hop DJ; community activist"

Listen on 88.5 FM in DC or online here

or listen to the archive after 2pm here

Then go write a DC council member and tell them how all-ages shows helped you to be the upstanding citizen you are today.

rewriting bukowski

now, i've never read any bukowski, and I have a feeling that his misogyny and my feminism will never see eye to eye, but i'm completely fascinated by Crazy Mike's rewriting of one of his books & using it as a sketchbook. Mike's LOVING A DOG FROM HELL reworks, edits draws and rewrites the pages, and is being thoroughly, lovingly documented (as photojournalists tend to do) on his blog. I've not gotten a chance to flip through it myself, but im enthralled.

very seattle weekend

So, I really liked this piece when it was at the seattle asian art museum, but now that its at the oympic sculpture park on seattle’s waterfront, its been covered in bird shit, this is one day’s worth of said bird shit. Par for the course because there was also a pile of crap pretending to be a sculpture.

It always surprises me when I hear about ongoing radio plays in Britain--it's a narrative form that's completely disappeared on our end of things but still appears to be live and well in England.

Anyways, here's a fun service that offers easy-to-download old time radio shows. I haven't checked it out yet but I'm tempted, especially because ben.c and I are facing some road trips in the near future, specifically to the vet school in Blacksburg. Our Christmas journeys were much enhanced by an audiobook recording of The Areas of My Expertise. I'd like to see if I can find something as entertaining.

Anybody have any audiobooks they might recommend for people on a long trip? (We've already got all the David Sedaris you can shake a stick at)

Richmond art teacher fired for making art

from my friend c.t. -
Apparently, this guy who teaches art in the public schools in the suburbs of Richmond uses his ass to do paintings, in his own free time. He appeared on cable access doing this, in disguise, and his students found it, and this wound him up getting fired or suspended.

check out his other work & self documentation of his trouble at his website - buttprintart.com
while i'm not enthralled by his work, his right to make it, outside of school, on his own time and with his own body needs to be respected. wake-up Chesterfield County schools. just because you don't like it doesn't mean its hurting the students. Instead of punishing a teacher for doing work on their own time, can't you try supporting them instead? and focusing on the teachers that are actually doing damage in the classroom by ignoring students, squashing creativity, and assigning busy work instead of teaching.

WARNING!!

You may have heard of the South Asian Durian fruit, and been tempted to sample the yellow flesh beneath it's spiky armored exterior. Considering yourself a food connoisseur, you thought, 'I can look past it's repugnant smell, and sample the exotic custardy goodness inside.' Well, sirs and madams, you would be wrong, wrong, WRONG to think such a thing. Durian must be avoided at all costs.

Mr. Smooth & I had an unfortunate encounter with this thorny beast while visiting the Eden Center. Thinking ourselves gastronauts, and he determined to like bubble tea, we marched into a Vietnamese bakery, and ordered a durian bubble tea. We'd heard it was good - we were so wrong.

One sip left confusion and distaste. A second sip reinforced the belief and brought to light a custard + rotten onion flavor. Plus the large black tapioca bubbles. A third sip had me chasing Mr Smooth with the cup into the parking lot. 'Oh god! Get it away from me!' 'It was your idea!!' he retorted. Touché.

It stunk up the car all the way to the grocery store. I threw it out in the parking lot, but that only disturbed the smell. Burps in the horrendous Sunday check-out line only brought the horrorible flavor back. Later, we had hallucinations of the smell and flavor. God save us.

Clearly, we are not the only one to be aghast by this. Novelist Anthony Burgess said dining on durian is like eating vanilla custard in a latrine. It's known as the world's most dangerous fruit for a reason. STAY AWAY FROM DURIAN!!

Happy New [Art] Year!

Happy New Year!

Let's make 2007 the Year of Art. Promote the arts (visual, performing, edible, other) in any way that you can. The more art is valued, the better positioned we are to earn a living from ART. Think about it, most if not all of the BG bloggers are involved in the arts, either as a livelihood or as a way of staying sane (or both)! The example shown may not be the greatest art, but some guy in Richmond is posting paintings on street signs, a great way to get the work out there! I saw him the other day, hanging another painting on aonther sign post..... Here's a quote from Sean Lennon (John & Yoko's 31-year old son): "The difference between artists and nonartists to me is not necessarily related to talent; it's that artists take art seriously and everyone else kind of doesn't. I grew up taking art so seriously that I think it's the way to live. " Me too. How about you?
